There\u2019s a definite possibility that twelve months from now, the points made in this post could be completely out of date. Changes are happening fast; ever since AI went mainstream in 2023, newer, more \u201cskilled\u201d versions are being released regularly. Just a few weeks ago, in fact, OpenAI made public its newest reasoning model\u2014 named o1. This version is apparently capable of solving complex math, representing a huge leap forward from earlier versions like GPT-4o\u2014and even some academics at MIT are impressed. The reach of AI and its forays into fields like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.civilgeo.com\/a-coffee-bar-and-other-perks\/\">engineering<\/a> is fascinating, particularly for someone like me who has practiced hydrology for decades. I remain skeptical that machines\u2014even if powered with highly sophisticated algorithms\u2014could replace the multi-layered training and decades of non-quantifiable experience of a senior engineer. AI will help, certainly, but it will be a partner, not a \u201csole practitioner\u201d\u2014at least for the foreseeable future. USGS\u2019s ShakeAlert system relies on AI algorithms to detect and analyze seismic events, triggering alerts when specific thresholds are triggered. Its capacity to do so efficiently and masterfully makes its analyses seem almost \u201cintelligent\u201d because no human has ever\u2014or could ever\u2014come close. But this AI superpower is quickly making inroads into other areas of \u201cintelligence.\u201d As was noted in the introduction, OpenAI\u2019s recent iteration of AI can take apart problems and reason its way through what many consider complex math.<\/span><\/p><p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW259429011 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW259429011 BCX0\">I<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW259429011 BCX0\"> suppose it is<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW259429011 BCX0\"> possible that i<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW259429011 BCX0\">n time<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW259429011 BCX0\">the problems <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW259429011 BCX0\">encountered<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW259429011 BCX0\"> by<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW259429011 BCX0\"> a<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW259429011 BCX0\"> hydrologist<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW259429011 BCX0\">\u2014first the simple ones, then the more complex<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW259429011 BCX0\">\u2014will<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW259429011 BCX0\"> be tackled by AI<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW259429011 BCX0\"> powered by<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW259429011 BCX0\"> algorithms developed by<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW259429011 BCX0\"> a <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW259429011 BCX0\">civil engineer<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW259429011 BCX0\">. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW259429011 BCX0\">(Note that <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW259429011 BCX0\">I\u2019m<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW259429011 BCX0\"> not saying that these attempts will necessarily be successful.) <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW259429011 BCX0\">Also,<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW259429011 BCX0\"> at some point in the future, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW259429011 BCX0\">AI <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW259429011 BCX0\">may<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW259429011 BCX0\"> be trained <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW259429011 BCX0\">on data <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW259429011 BCX0\">classified and <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW259429011 BCX0\">interpreted by engineers<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW259429011 BCX0\"> in a kind of \u201con the job\u201d apprenticeship<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW259429011 BCX0\">, much like AI technology may be trained on operational safety standards<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW259429011 BCX0\">. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW259429011 BCX0\">It is this scenario<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW259429011 BCX0\">, however,<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW259429011 BCX0\"> that makes me skeptical. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW259429011 BCX0\">Co<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW259429011 BCX0\">uld AI <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW259429011 BCX0\">really <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW259429011 BCX0\">offer a sophisticated<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW259429011 BCX0\">, well-reasoned<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW259429011 BCX0\"> analysis for a complex hydrological modeling problem? <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW259429011 BCX0\">This point <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW259429011 BCX0\">underlines <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW259429011 BCX0\">a<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW259429011 BCX0\">fundamental<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW259429011 BCX0\"> issue<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW259429011 BCX0\">, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW259429011 BCX0\">noted by<\/span> <\/span><a class=\"Hyperlink SCXW259429011 BCX0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.asce.org\/publications-and-news\/civil-engineering-source\/civil-engineering-magazine\/issues\/magazine-issue\/article\/2023\/09\/what-does-human-machine-intelligence-mean-for-civil-engineers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span class=\"TextRun Underlined SCXW259429011 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW259429011 BCX0\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"Hyperlink\">Zhang et al. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW259429011 BCX0\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"Hyperlink\">in an ASCE article<\/span><\/span><\/a><span class=\"TextRun SCXW259429011 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW259429011 BCX0\"> on potential machine<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW259429011 BCX0\">&#8211;<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW259429011 BCX0\">engineer<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW259429011 BCX0\"> partnerships<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW259429011 BCX0\">: thinking like a<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW259429011 BCX0\">n experienced<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW259429011 BCX0\"> hydrologist is no simple m<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW259429011 BCX0\">att<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW259429011 BCX0\">er.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW259429011 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Quite a bit goes into the making of a competent and skilled hydrologist. Years of rigorous coursework in a math-heavy discipline is followed by hands-on field experience; the theory learned in college gives way to a knowledge base that grows more layered with each project. Hydrologists need to work with interest groups, budgets, unique hydrologic conditions that are never replicated, and a myriad of other variables and unforeseen circumstances. In other words, a great deal of an engineer\u2019s knowledge base is unpredictable, ever-changing and experiential.
